The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has agreed to a tentative settlement for $880 million to resolve thousands of child sex abuse claims.
The lawsuits were filed under California Assembly Bill 218, which temporarily lifted the statute of limitations, offering a three-year period to bring forward civil claims for past cases of child sexual assault. This settlement addresses claims filed against the Archdiocese under the 2019 bill, covering 1,353 cases. To date, this landmark settlement marks the largest single child sex abuse settlement reached with a Catholic archdiocese.
